Please donate your gently used or new skates, hockey equipment and helmets (helmets must be manufactured within the last three years) to any StorageMart or Play It Again Sports location listed in the map above. Most questions about the donation process can be answered by clicking on our Frequently Asked Questions page. If your skates are in poor condition or are very old we request you dispose of them instead of trying to donate them. We only collect skates, helmets and sticks in usable condition.
Skates become challenging to refurbish and cost Skate To Great to dispose of them if we can not use them. We’re seeking skates that can be passed along to kids directly with a quick sharpen or perhaps new laces which we can provide.
Sometimes staff at the companies we’ve partnered with are new to the location and are unfamiliar with the program. To avoid disappointment, we always request you call ahead. Should the employee be unfamiliar with the program, please direct them to the employee instructions link at the top of this page.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DONATING SKATES AT PLAY IT AGAIN SPORTS VS. STORAGEMART AND OTHER PARTNER CHARITY LOCATIONS?
In 2011 when we first started Skate To Great, we were collecting skates exclusively at StorageMart locations across Canada. Once annually with the assistance and support of FedEx we would consolidate the skates to regional areas and bring in excess of fifty volunteers for hours to sort through the skates. Unfortunately, we could not provide skates for the duration of the year or tax receipts for donors as there were not trained valuation professionals at StorageMart locations.
We are extremely thankful StorageMart continues to support us and our efforts. If you are not seeking a tax receipt, there are a number of StorageMart locations across the country that will happily receive your donation.
With our new partnership with Play It Again Sports, Skate To Great receives store credit for your donation. We simply turn your Play It Again Sports receipt into a charitable receipt for the credit received to the Skate To Great account. This allows us to request certain sizes from Play It Again’s national inventory or even send a child to receive equipment and be fitted at a store location. Furthermore, your store credit allows us to purchase helmets as we always seem to be short. With this model there is a possibility that your particular skates won’t go directly to a child supported by our program, but with the credit from your donation they can get the exact size they need. It’s a great partnership which has streamlined our operation.
Our map is a resource to get your old skates to someone who could benefit from them! In addition to StorageMart and Play It Again Sports locations, we’ve included several great charities and organizations in need of skates that will receive your donation. We thank you for your support. Please see our frequently asked questions or contact us page if you have any questions.
OTHER WAYS TO SUPPORT SKATE TO GREAT
Skate To Great is powered by the generous support of volunteers and donors like you. You can assist us in many ways.
Donate New or Used Skates
We’re always seeking lightly used skates and equipment. Unfortunately if your skates are worn out we likely wont be able to use them. We do basic refurbishment by sharpening skates and placing new laces where needed.
For drop-off locations, visit our drop-off locations map.
Regulations require us to look up a book value for each pair and unfortunately we are not setup for this task at StorageMart locations. We can only offer taxable receipts for donations made at Play It Again Sports locations. We apologize for any inconvenience.
We appreciate all levels of monetary support. Monetary donations assist with refurbishing skates (covers, laces, sharpening), helmets (which we are always in need of), providing the places we support with a slush fund for covering ice time and assisting us with maintaining basic administration expenses. These include insurance, phone lines, business cards and brochures. For more information or to make a tax deductible monetary donation please contact us at email@example.com.
Join Our Volunteer Team
At Skate to Great, we are 100% run by volunteers. We couldn’t do what we do without people like you! Bring whatever you specialize in to our volunteer team. We often need people to represent the Skate To Great booth at events. Please visit our Volunteer page for more information on volunteer opportunities with Skate To Great.
Logistics and Sorting Skates
We require volunteers a few times a year to help sort skates and equipment. If you or someone you know may be interested please visit our Volunteer page for more information on volunteer opportunities with Skate To Great.
Suggest A Charity, School or Program in need
We are always seeking organizations that support deserving kids and at-risk youth getting on the ice. It could be a community program, a charity or a school. We want to assist existing programs with what they do best.
Create a skate drive with your school, team, or place of work
Collect hockey and figure skates and lightly used equipment (sticks, pads and helmets) and drop them at one of our donation locations. Please call the location you’re going to ahead of time. A message was sent to all StorageMart locations from their head office, but donations at some locations are infrequent and staff may not be familiar with the process. If you have any issues with a location knowing about or accepting a donation, please message us and a member of our volunteer team will be happy to assist.
Notify your local Member of Parliament
Contact your local government officials to see if they would like to get involved. Tell them about Skate To Great and see if they could provide us with leads for organizations in your community where we could assist. Or request they write Skate To Great a letter of support, or provide a skate drive at their office.
Make A Connection
Tell the people in your life who you think could assist Skate To Great to contact us. We are always seeking more people across the country that can take what started as a small project to an even greater level. Every connection helps.
